This series was inspired by John Fire Lame Deer's statement: "You must fly as soar as high as an eagle and crawl as low as a worm. These two animals, the eagle and worm, symbolize the sacred and profane, which are flip sides of the same coin. I think of these paintings as the Greater Vehicle series, thinking of the Buddhist view that it is a challenge but worthy pursuit to be holy and harmonious out in the world, as opposed to cloistered in a temple.
