Student spots body in river near campus
The body of an unidentified man, who appeared to be 18 to 20 years
old, was found in the Mississippi River, near the Washington Avenue
Bridge on Monday morning, after a student spotted it, Minneapolis
police said.
The body appeared to have been in the river for some time and
is being investigated by the Minneapolis Police Homicide Unit,
although the cause of the man's death has not been determined,
Lt. L.A. Evenrud of the Minneapolis park police said.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiners Office said the autopsy
and identification of the body should be completed Tuesday morning.
A female student on her way to class spotted the corpse floating
along the river on the West Bank, Evenrud said.
Police officials from several departments searched for the body
Monday morning, and a Minneapolis Fire Department boat recovered
the body near the University's Centennial Showboat's dock before
noon, Evenrud said.
He said he thinks this is the third body found in the Mississippi
this year, which he said is average.
In the two previous cases, two women jumped off the Franklin Avenue
bridge at different times in January. One woman was found dead,
and another was pulled ashore and survived, Evenrud said.

Body identified; drowning suspected
Drowning is the suspected cause of death of a 27-year-old Minneapolis
man recovered from the Mississippi River on Monday, police said
Tuesday.
Authorities recovered the body of Christopher Jack Nordby just
after 9 a.m. Monday after a University student spotted it in the
river on her way to class.
Nordby is a former University student last registered in spring
2000. Minneapolis police had been investigating his disappearance
since Nov. 7 after Nordby's father, Hennepin County District Judge
Jack Nordby, reported his son missing.
Nordby was last seen in November near the Minneapolis warehouse
district. He never returned home from work that day, and his bag
was later discovered near the Mississippi River, according to
documents from the Nation's Missing Children Organization and
Center for Missing Adults.
Minneapolis police Sgt. Thomas O'Rourke had been investigating
Nordby's disappearance. He said from what he knew of Nordby, it
was not uncharacteristic of him to have been near the river.
"That would've been one of the ways he went to work,"
he said.
An evaluation by the Hennepin County medical examiner revealed
no signs of evident trauma on the body, but Minneapolis police
are still investigating the death pending toxicology reports,
said Minneapolis police spokeswoman Cyndi Montgomery.
"It's all based on the medical examiner's findings,"
she said.
