Rider found in Hudson after race

By Kerry Burke An annual race and rally for bike messengers came to a tragic finish yesterday when the body of a rider was found floating off a Manhattan pier, cops said.

"At first, I thought it was a mannequin," said Wade Rosen, 39, of Mount Olive, N.J., a passerby who made the grisly find yesterday just after 1 p.m. About 100 bike messengers gathered at Pier 63 in Chelsea Saturday for Monster Track, an annual party featuring a three-hour race around the Bronx and Brooklyn and back to Manhattan. The 8 a.m. race starts and ends at the pier. After the competition, there was a party on the Frying Pan, a moored boat that's also a popular nightspot.

"It was a fun day and it just turned into tragedy," said John Krevey, owner of the Frying Pan.

Police said the dead man is a 36-year-old bike messenger who lived in the Bronx and is originally from Vancouver. He was found fully clothed, with a green messenger bag. His body was wrapped in the heavy chain he used to secure his bike, cops and witnesses said. Cops said it was unclear how the man, whose name was not released pending family notification, wound up in the water. But they do not suspect foul play. A police source said a friend reported seeing him drunk on the boat around 9 p.m. Saturday. It's possible he may have suffered a seizure triggered by a shooting incident a decade ago in Canada, the source said.
