St. Brendan: He Came, He
Saw, He Went Back Home, acrylic
on canvas, 30"x40"
Brendan the Navigator was a
5th and 6th century Irish saint whose travels in the northern Atlantic
were recorded in the 9th century Navigatio. He is said
to have reached the shores of North America. In the 1977 Tim Severin
retraced Brendan's voyage in a faithful replica of the saints' hide-covered
boat. The Navigatio is still filled with fantastical embellishments,
such as the crew of monks celebrating Easter on the back of a whale
(the whale in this piece is inspired by the Blue Whale in Catoosa,
OK). Brendan's story is one of exploration without accompanying
colonization or military force.
